About Becky

Becky Becker is the founder of Becky’s Box of Puppets, a one-woman puppet company established in 1980. Her passion is in making puppets that come to life to create magical memories for children.

Becky believes in the power of the puppet and its unique ability to communicate. For 40+ years, she’s seen children‘s eyes grow wide with squeals of delight as her fabric characters romp about the stage. Be it a known fairytale or an original story, her puppets encourage empathy, imagination, and fun.

Ranging from four inches to eight feet, she crafts each puppet using a variety of textiles and techniques. Clay, paper mache, and soft sculpture are her favorites.

She got her start performing at the Charleston Museum. When Turkish puppeteer Metin Ozlen performed at the Museum, Becky was recruited to assist during his show. This included dozens of exquisitely made shadow puppets. Performing live and speaking only in Turkish made for a hair-raising experience.

As a long time member of Puppeteers of America, she’s attended National and Regional festivals. At the 1989 National festival, she was introduced to Jim Henson — creator of the Muppets. Her autographed poster of Kermit is a treasure. She attended a three week puppetry course at Washington State University and studied with Joseph Krafts, Director of DRAK: an internationally known company located in then Czech Slovakia.

She received a scholarship to attend Puppet Fest Midwest and studied with award-winning puppeteer, Lumen Coad of Coad Canada Puppets. When renowned American puppeteer Basil Twist brought his production Sleeping Beauty in the Woods to Spoleto Festival USA, Becky was invited to work behind the scenes. When Italian company, the Colla Family Marrionettes performed for Spoleto Festival USA, Becky hosted dinner in her home for the 13 members. Eugenio Monti-Colla, fifth generation puppeteer declared the apple pie as “bellissimo!”. Witnessing their many performances from back stage was nothing short of spectacular.

Her work has been seen across South Carolina at libraries, festivals, schools, conferences, daycares, special events, television and video, plus more.
